Keeping Your Bunny Happy

December 15 2015
Have you recently adopted a bunny? Congratulations on your furry new arrival! Bunnies are definitely very fun and cute, and can make wonderful animal companions. If you’ve never had a rabbit before, you will want to do some research, as Floppy’s care needs are quite different from those of dogs and cats. While a good diet, comfy habitat, and regular veterinary care are all very important to your rabbit’s health, you’ll need to go a bit further to keep your bunny happy. Below, a Neshoba County, MS vet talks about keeping rabbits happy.

Toys

Floppy will get quite bored and restless without proper playthings to keep her amused. Since bunnies need to chew to keep their teeth healthy, you’ll want to provide plenty of safe and suitable chew toys. These can be store-bought bunny toys, or repurposed items made of wood, wicker, paper, or cardboard. There are many fun and easy options for making rabbit toys. Stuff the cardboard tube from a toilet paper roll with fresh Timothy hay, or hide a yummy snack in some plain shredded paper. Just avoid items with small parts or sharp edges, and anything made or coated with toxic materials.

Free Time

Bunnies must be allowed out of their cages every day. Offer Floppy lots of fun things to do during this time. You can give her little balls to push around, or make her a cute obstacle course out of boxes and ottomans. You will need to bunnyproof your home before letting your furball out to play. This means securing, removing, or protecting furniture legs; unsafe plants; chemicals and medications; wires and cords; baseboards; and anything your pet shouldn’t chew. Ask your vet for more information.

Love

Our animal companions need love to be truly happy. Spend some quality time with your adorable little buddy every day. Pet her, groom her, play with her, and give her toys and treats. You can even teach Floppy some cute tricks! This is a great way for you to unwind after a long day. Don’t be surprised if you are rewarded with cuddles and affection. The love of an animal is a beautiful gift, and, in our book, is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Do you have questions about your pet’s health, care, or behavior? Please reach out to us!
